Hiring for Culture Fit Without Losing Diversity
Culture fit matters, but done badly it leads to teams that all think alike. Here's how to assess values alignment the right way.
Hiring for culture fit is one of the most misunderstood ideas in recruitment. Done well, it builds cohesive teams. Done poorly, it becomes a reason to hire people who look and think like the existing team.
Define your culture in behaviours
Turn values into observable behaviours. What does "accountability" look like in this role on a normal day?
Assess for values, not similarity
Use structured, competency-based questions that ask candidates for real examples, and score answers against agreed criteria.
Think "culture add"
Ask what perspective, skill or experience a candidate brings that your team is missing.
Make the process consistent
Every candidate for a role should face the same core questions and evaluation criteria. Consistency reduces bias.
Getting this balance right helps you build teams that share purpose but bring different strengths.
